Certified Medication Aide (CMA) Job Description

Department: Nursing Reports To: Unit Manager FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary

Administers prescribed medications to residents and maintains related medical records under supervision of Charge Nurse and cares for residents in nursing home, under the direction of nursing and medical staff and in accordance of the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned.

  • Verifies identity of resident receiving medication and records name of drug, dosage, and time of administration on specified forms or records.
  • Presents medication to resident and observes ingestion or other application, or administers medication.
  • Takes vital signs or observes resident to detect response to specified types of medications and prepares report or notifies designated personnel of unexpected reactions.
  • Documents reasons prescribed drugs are not administered.
  • Gives direct resident care that falls within the CNA job description, and assists Charge Nurse in examinations and treatments as needed.
  • Receives supply of ordered medications and apportions, mixes, or assembles drugs for administration to resident.
  • Records and restocks medication inventories.
  • Assists residents to meet daily needs while providing a safe environment and ensuring the dignity and well being of residents.
  • Answers call lights, bells, or intercom system within 5 minutes to determine residents’ needs.
  • Reports pertinent residents’ information to charge nurse.
  • Must consistently display and model the EdenHill Spirit hospitality behavior models.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience:

Completion of Certified Nurse Aide Course and passing of Texas State test, as well as the Medication Aide Certification test for Texas.

Language Skills:

Must have the ability to; recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Must also be able to read and write the English language, and communicate by speaking simple sentences.

Mathematical Skills:

Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Must obtain and maintain criteria established by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services regarding certification for both Certified Nurse Aide and Medication Aide.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
